Why walk here when you could order it?

SodaStream sells an exchange online for a dollar less than we do. That dollar buys you: boxing up the empty, printing a label, getting to a post office, waiting about three business days — and a 60-day clock, after which they charge you $15 per cylinder you haven't returned.

Or you walk to 1st Avenue and it's done in about a minute, with no clock running. Plenty of people happily take the dollar. We think most of Yorkville would rather have the minute.

    Starting from scratch

The Terra is $99.99 in black or white and we have both on the shelf. Here's the part worth thinking about before you buy a machine anywhere else: the machine is a one-time decision, but the gas is a forever decision. You'll need a fresh cylinder every six to eight weeks for as long as you own it. Buy the machine from a big box and you're on your own for the part you actually need. Buy it here and every refill after is $17.99 over this counter.

    Getting it to you

    • Pick up in store — usually ready in about two hours.
    • Local delivery — we bring it to you in Manhattan ourselves.
    • Shipping — machines, bottles and accessories go anywhere.
    • CO2 cylinders can't be shipped. A filled cylinder is compressed gas regulated by the US DOT, and SodaStream ships them under a special permit issued only to them. So cylinders are pickup or local delivery — that's the law, not a policy choice.

One tip most people have never heard

Your carbonating bottle has an expiry date stamped near the base, usually three years out. It's there because the plastic holds real pressure every time you carbonate. Go and look at yours right now. Almost nobody ever has.
