Benjamin Moore Finishes

Paint Sheen Guide

From flat to high gloss, here is how to choose the right finish for every room and surface.

The sheen, or finish, is how much light a paint reflects, and it changes both the look and the durability of a wall. Flatter finishes hide imperfections and feel soft and matte. Glossier finishes are more durable and easier to wipe down. Here is a quick guide, and our team at 1668 1st Ave is always happy to help you choose.

Benjamin Moore guide to choosing a paint finish: flat, matte, eggshell, satin and semi-gloss, high gloss

The Five Finishes

  • Flat & Ultra Flat, best for ceilings and walls in low-traffic spaces
  • Matte, great for walls in living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms
  • Eggshell, ideal for high-traffic walls in living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms
  • Satin & Semi-Gloss, made for trim, doors, cabinets, and wainscoting
  • High Gloss, for trim, doors, cabinets, and architectural details

Flatter Hides More

Flat and matte finishes are more forgiving of wall imperfections and give a soft, modern look.

Glossier Lasts Longer

Satin, semi-gloss, and high gloss stand up to scrubbing, making them ideal for kitchens, baths, trim, and doors.
